My dog's eye is bleeding after a cat scratch. What should I do now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 2 years old | 10 lbs

Our two year old Chihuahua Choco got scratched in the eye today by our outside cat who came in our house. They have little if not any interaction with each other because they fight and he was scratched in the eye. He's keeping it tightly closed and it's bleeding a little. We can afford to take him to the vet we need some advice of how to help him.

Poor Choco! This really needs to be seen by a veterinarian as it will likely become infected and for what you described it may need surgery to save his eye. However as I understand that is not possible you can try applying saline drops and keeping the site clean and wiping away any discharge from the bottom of his eye that may occur. Also he should wear an E collar at all times so he cannot scratches or rub it. There are some veterinarians that do payment plans as well something called care credit you may want to look into so you could take him to a veterinarian soon.
