My dog has a painful black bump near her spay incision. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

So I recently noticed Stella has a small black bump just under the skin, close in proximity to her spay incision site. She was spayed in April of this year. Is this something I should be concerned about? She does seem to be bothered by that spot being touched.

It looks like this may be a bit of suture working its way out. Internal sutures are absorbable but sometimes they may not fully break down. If it develops any more redness or swelling you may want to take her to the vet to get it removed but if she isn't licking it or bothered by it you can monitor for a bit to see if it works itself out.

It is likely just the suture knot under the skin. I would not be worried about it. It should eventually resolve on it's own. I suggest you put some Neosporin on it 2-3 times per day until it is healed over. If you notice any swelling or discharge coming from that spot then I suggest you take her back to the vet for an exam. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
