Cat's ear is swollen and bleeding from scratching. Does he need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

I am not sure whats causing it but my cat keeps scratching his right ear and now its swollen and he just took a chunk out of it. Do I need to go right to the vet or is there any way I can use an at home remedy? Someone recommened vaseline but now its an open wound and I am afraid to use a human product because of the chemicals. Any advice would be appreciated thank you.

This needs absolutely to be seen by your veterinarian. Allister may have an allergic reaction or an otitis causing such a persistent itch. The underlying cause must be recognized and treated appropriately. Antibiotics has to be given as the wound looks infected. Please do not hesitate to contact us again on the forum or by requesting a consultation if you have any more questions or to discuss it any further.

Poor Allister! He created a decent open wound on his ear that home remedies are unlikely to help. A trip to the vet will be needed because Allister likely needs a course of antibiotics. Since he has been scratching his ears quite a bit, the vet will also be able to evaluate his ear canals to determine if an ear infection or ear mites are present. If you have an e-collar (cone), keep one on Allister until his vet visit to prevent him from scratching more. I hope that he's on the mend soon!
