Spayed dog has raw skin from cone scratching. What to do after spay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 2 years and 3 months old | 11 lbs

We recently got pudding from a rehung shelter where they spayed her, she had been with us for a few days and has her cone on but is using her back leg to scratch at it and has created a patch of raw skin. Should I put anything on it? Leave her to it? Is it some kind of infection?

Pudding is adorable! You can try putting a small tee shirt on her and tie it up on her back so it doesn't drag, and she can't scratch at the incision. It is probably itchy. If she seems painful at all, I'd make sure to visit your vet to get some pain medication. I sometimes use an over-the-counter steroid cream or diaper rash cream around the incision if it seems like there is a rash or if it is very irritated from clipper-burn. Hope that helps!
