Declawed cat growing a nail-like growth. Is it a health concern?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered

My cat was declawed before we adopted him but I have recently found that he has grown a nail or something like it. We have had him for 2 years.

It is possible your cat has what is called a "cutaneous horn" on her foot, which is an overgrowth of keratin and can look like a claw. If the area isn't bothering a cat we often leave it alone, but if it does cause discomfort then removal is recommended. A vet exam is also recommended to be sure there isn't any other pathology going on in this area, as these can also be seen in cats with feline leukemia or a cancer called squamous cell carcinoma, and we want to be sure there isn't something more concerning going on here.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is likely a cutaneous horn which can grow on the paw pad and look like a nail. If they are not causing any pain when walking we tend to ignore them. They can form due to papilloma virus, feline leukemia, or be a type of cancer (squamous cell carcinoma). They can be trimmed but tend to reoccur. If the horn is causing pain when walking it should be surgically removed at the base. I wish you the best!
