New mom cat separating kittens after guests. Is this normal behavior?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 3 months old | 7 lbs

Hello, my cat has given birth a week ago exactly, and she has been a really good mom since then. However, thia very morning she started behaving really weird. She is seperating 3 or 4 of her 9 kittens and isolating them in different corners of her room... We had a lot of guests yesterday so we were wondering if it is a normal behaviour after the stress of seeing too many people, or if we should worry about the kittens? We're worried they will get cold all alone... What should we do?

The kitten all need to be kept together. If she had too many people bothering her yesterday, she may be trying to move the kittens to a new place. Try to put the kittens back with her, other than that try to minimize handling and disturbing her, while still keeping an eye on them. If she is not nursing all of them or keeps rejecting some, then you may need to intervene and bottle feed some of the babies. Limit allowing other people to visit Copernic and babies.
