My pregnant dog had a difficult birth. Should I x-ray for pups?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | unspayed

Hi, my kc spaniel is expecting Cavapoo pups (second litter, she had 5 kc spaniels last year). She's 6wks gone today and looks very round in the tummy already, do you recommend I get a scan or xrayed to confirm number of pups as her first got stuck and died last year which was traumatic for us both. I'm having her neutered after this litter and really hope for a safe delivery, she's a fab mummy but I worry about the birth. Advice appreciated, thanks Viv

Hi Viv! Penny is a beautiful girl, and this is a great question! Yes, I absolutely recommend having her seen by a vet to get an x-ray to confirm the number of puppies she is having. That way, you will know how many to expect, and when to call the vet if they aren't making an appearance. Given that she has had previous problems giving birth, I would start saving as well for the possibly of a c-section. I will put a link below to a website that details problems to look out for when whelping so you know when to call the vet and get her in right away in case she does need a c section. The vet can spay her as well at the time of the c section should she need one. Good on you for reaching out for help :) http://www.2ndchance.info/caninelaborstages.htm
