My dog has a bleeding, scabby neck lump. What is it? How to treat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Terrier | Male | unneutered | 4 years and 6 months old | 18 lbs

Found this (please see pics attached) on my Border Terrier about 3 days ago, took a pic then and another just now to compare the difference. It seems to have been bleeding and scabby but not sure if he's scratch it. It's on the back of his neck. Do you know what this is and how to treat it? I've got an appointment at the vets but I wasn't sure whether I am overreacting. I hope I am and it's nothing serious!

A visit to your vet is always the safest bet! This could be a benign papillomatous growth like a sebaceous adenoma, that doesn't require treatment unless it is bothering your pet, but we want to be sure it isn't anything that could behave aggressively like a mast cell tumor. The vet will examine the area and may recommend a needle aspirate to collect some cells to aid in identification.
