My dog's split dew claw is red and he's licking it. Vet or home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 40 lbs

My dog has a split dew claw. Is it red and he is licking it quite a lot. Is this something I should see the vet for? Or should it be left alone to heal?

I would try and trim the dew claw as short as possible so it doesn't get caught on anything and tear and then rinse it clean with some dilute hydrogen peroxide. After that it is probably safe to keep an eye on it and just make sure it doesn't become red or oozes, which could indicate infection. If you do have concerns that it could be infected I would recommend taking him to your vet so a proper antibiotic can be prescribed.

Hello As it is bothering him and he continues to lick it I recommend having your vet examine Scout and possibly trim/remove that nail so it can regrow. If he continues to lick it the area can become infected, causing further pain and issues.
