My cat is shedding a lot and has dandruff. What food or supplements?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 8 lbs

My four year old cat has always been a shedder, but recently I've noticed that she's shedding much more and has a ton of dandruff. She hates being brushed and I don't give her baths. I was wondering if you could recommend something like a better food brand or supplement for her condition.

I would recommend the Duoxo shampoo (seborrhea if it is dry flaky skin, available online) and pet formulated fish oils from your local pet store. The shampoo will help exfoliate her follicles and the fish oil is a natural anti-inflammatory. Ask your local sales rep to point you towards what options they have as far as fish oils go. They are all pretty much equivocal. I would also consider having her thyroid levels tested and baseline bloodwork analysis done to ensure there are no underlying causes for her unhealthy appearing haircoat. Best wishes with managing The Messaiahs skin.

Omega-3 fatty acid supplements such as Welactin added to the food daily can be very helpful for dry skin and excessive shedding in cats - so you could certainly give this a try if you like! :) If there is no improvement within a month or so of starting the supplement, or if she develops other problems such as excessive itching, scabs, or bald patches, then I would recommend having her seen by a vet, as these are often signs of an underlying skin condition that may need to be treated.
