Dog's ear lump burst, deep open abscess. How to care until vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 11 years and 4 months old | 50 lbs

Our 9 yr old lab had what we thought was a large lipoma behind her right ear. It was a hard lump the size of a peach. Today we looked at it and it was "deflated" and an open abcess that was deep. We can't get her to the vet until Tues due to the holiday tomorrow. We cleaned it and moved her inside, she's an outside dog.im thinking it's more than a simple abcess.

Poor Annie! It sounds like you did the right thing by cleaning it and moving her inside for now. You can use warm water and anti-bacterial soap to clean the wound 1-2 times daily if you need to, to help it continue to drain. As long as she is acting normal otherwise, this shouldn't be an emergency - but I would definitely try and take her to the vet on Tuesday if you can. It sounds like she'll need antibiotics at the very least, and may need additional treatment as well depending on the underlying cause of the abscess.
