My dog's ear lump is red, bleeding, and growing. Any home care?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 28 days old

My dog has a large red lump on the top of his ear! It was small when I first took him to the vet and the vet said it was ring worm. It didn't glow in that light they used to confirm it was ring worm but she said that doesn't mean it isn't. She gave me some shampoo and a Antifungal cream. Now the lump is bigger!! It started to bleed yesterday. I'm going to take him back to the vet but was wondering if there is any at home treatments before we go!

You don't mention if your vet did a culture to test for ringworm (this test takes several days so you wouldn't have results back the same day). We do sometimes see ringworm cause a raised nodule/swelling, so it is still possible and I would recommend a culture if one wasn't done. Other possibilities include a skin growth called a histiocytoma, a bacterial infection, ingrown hair, or foreign body. Your vet may also recommend an aspirate of the area to try to determine what is going on. Unfortunately there isn't an over the counter treatment for these.
