Can I use a different dewormer brand for my dog's follow-up dose?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 27 days old | 3.307 lbs

I left my pup at the vet yesterday because of dehydration and he was given IV drops. He was so lethargic. Now, the vet texted me and told me that he pooped worms and they dewormed him. He's being active again, they said. Question: if they dewormed him with tablets and I have another brand/med(syrup), can I administer the next deworming even with a different brand/med?

This would depend on the medication as well as the type of intestinal parasites that were observed. Discuss an appropriate dose of dewormer with your veterinarian if it will treat the same ones seen in the clinic.

It depends on what specific type of worms he has, since not all dewormers are effective against all types of worms - your vet should be able to give you a more specific answer on this, if you ask :) But in general, as long as the dewormer you have at home is effective against the worms that he was diagnosed with, it should be fine to use this for his follow-up dose.

Yes it is ok to alternate deworming medications but I would be cautious if he previously received the syrup and still had a large worm burden that it may not be effective against the type of worms he has. Check with your vet what type of worms were present and treatment options
