My orphaned puppy bites. When do they get rabies shots & learn not to?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Good day! Please help. Our puppy was orphaned at 2 weeks old. When does he learn bite inhibition? How do I assist him on that? Would it be safe to teach that to him when he hasn't had his rabies shots yet? When should a puppy have his rabies shots?

Normally, puppies learn bite inhibition from interacting with their littermates - it's extremely hard for humans to replicate this, so I would recommend finding some other young puppies for him to play with as soon as you can. Make sure that the other puppies he spends time with are healthy, and start your puppies vaccinations at 6 weeks of age to make sure that he is protected from diseases. He won't need a rabies vaccine until he is at least 12 weeks old - so until then, just make sure that he is only exposed to healthy animals.
