My betta fish hasn't eaten in days. How can I get him to eat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Fish | Unknown - Fish | Male

Smoke (adult betta) hasn't tried to eat in 7 days. He swims okay, looks okay ... isn't interested in pellets (that he ate happily for a year), pellets that float, bloodworm, daphnia, and flakes — all of which I've tried. Peas he lets float to the bottom. How do I get him to eat if he ignores all food dropped or floated in his tank?

Check the water temperature and water quality. If it is too cold, his appetite could be affected. Bettas should be kept between 78 F and 80 F. Do not let the temp drop below 74 F. Use a home test kit to check water quality. If ammonia, nitrate and nitrite levels are too high, you may need to increase chemical filtration or perform more frequent water changes using treated or aged water. Fast him for a day or two, then offer pellets or live worms (bloodworms, blackworms, etc.). Once temp and quality are normalized, he should regain his appetite.
