I'm sorry to hear that Cheif seems so painful. Unfortunately there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs. However, you can try glucosamine and chondroitin supplements (such as Dasuquin or Cosequin) to protect the cartilage in the joints. Fish oil supplements can also be used to decrease inflammation. If these supplements alone are ineffective, Cheif will need a trip to the vet so that prescription based pain medications can be started.

The best thing that can be done for a 9 year old overweight dog with joint pain is weight loss. I would consider changing diet to something like Hill's Metabolic / Mobility. This diet is designed for both weight loss and lubrication of the joints. In addition to this, you should speak to your vet about the addition of a non-steroidal anti inflammatory drug on a daily or as needed basis. This is the mainstay of treatment for arthritic pain in older dogs. Other treatment modalities includes acupuncture, laser therapy, supplements, and several other pharmaceutical drugs. I would also consider allowing Chief to rest a little bit more now in his older age even if he acts like he doesn't want to. It's for the best!

Have Chief examined by your veterinarian. Afterwards, an appropriate veterinary pain medication can be prescribed or dispensed. Do not give any OTC medications to her without the advice of your veterinarian. Discuss a weight loss diet with your veterinarian as well.
