My dog is panting and won't eat after spay. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 1 year and 2 months old | 8.6 lbs

My dog just got spayed two days ago and ever since she is so strange. The thing that gets me the most nervous is she is always panting and goes to sleep breathing very rapidly. She can never calm down and is always crying in pain. She won't eat either. I am extremely worried about the breathing at night. I was told to give her Benadryl but that doesn't even work. They prescribed her pain pills and antibiotics as well

This is a medical emergency. These symptoms suggest that Belle may have a complication from the surgery itself or a reaction to her medication. She need to be seen and evaluated by your vet as soon as possible. Panting can be a sign of pain, sepsis (bacteria in the bloodstream),anemia (low blood cell count) or as I mentioned earlier an adverse effect of the medicaiton she is on. But her not eating suggests she may either be in pain or have an infection stemming from her surgery site. Please take her in right away.
