My dog ate old chicken bones, is bloated and vomiting. ER vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Female | spayed | 15 lbs

My 12 year old bichon got into the trash and ate the majority of a 3+ week old chicken (mostly bones) and some duck bones. She is visibly bloated and her stomach is usually firm to the touch. It has been approximately 6 hours and she has vomited once. My local vet is closed, should I take her to an emergency vet?

Yes. The consumption of any cooked bones has the potential to have disastrous consequences unfortunately. X rays should be obtained and she should be monitored very closely. In addition, even if the bones pass, three week old chicken is pretty nasty. She will require some treatment for her indigestion, the diarrhea that is going to occur, and the nausea that she will be experiencing. I hope Luch feels well soon!
