Onions can be toxic to dogs, for such a big dog this amount is not likely to be toxic but this cannot be ruled out completely. symptoms you need to be looking for: Lethargy. Weakness. Ataxia (lack of muscle coordination) Pale gums. Red or brown discolored urine. Hyper-salivation. Occasional vomiting and/or diarrhea.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Kira is happy, active, and eating and drinking normally, it is very very unlikely that she is developing onion toxicity. Besides, one cooked onion ring for a dog this size is usually pretty safe. Continue monitoring for the next 24 hours and if you DO note any lethargy, loss of appetite, or other concerning signs, please have her seen right away. Best wishes to you and Kira!

Onion rings consist mostly of breading and fat and a relatively thin slice of onion. Hollie is a relatively big dog so 5 rings of onion will likely not cause onion toxicity in her. However the fatty breading may cause some diarrhea. Overall I do not think you have to worry. Should she get lethargic, pale, or tired within the next 5 or 6 days , she should be seen by a veterinarian for an exam, as onion toxicity tends to affect the red blood cells, destroys them, and so causes anemia.
