My tiny puppy has a cleft lip. How do I ensure she eats enough?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 6 days old | 1lb

Our dog had a litter of 4 puppies Saturday night. One is very tiny and she had a cleft lip (not the palate), but the cleft lip from what we can tell. We are worried about her being able to eat or not getting enough to eat. Is there anything special we need to be doing for her? We just want her happy, healthy, and growing.

I am sorry to hear about your puppy! I would recommend a visit to the vet for her to ensure there aren't any other congenital problems you may not see at first glance. It may be a good idea to purchase a small scale that can measure in grams or ounces, so you can weigh her daily or before and after eating to be sure she is getting milk and growing. You can find these online but also in with kitchen appliances at stores. If she is not gaining weight, youbmay need to supplement her nursing with puppy formula such as Esbilac which can be purchased along with a bottle at the pet store or your vet office.
