I am sorry to hear about Brob. A bite wound should be seen by a veterinarian ASAP. Unfortunately mouths contain a good number of bacteria and we usually want to put the bitten dog on an antibiotic. The vet can clean and flush the wound (sometimes once we see them the damage is worse than initially thought because fur hides a lot!), and give the appropriate medication. In the meantime, discourage licking by using an e-collar or t-shirt depending on the location of the wound. If the wound wasn't cleaned, you can use a mild soap or pick up a product called hibiclens at the drug store to clean the area well until he sees the vet.

Poor Axel! I would take a soft cloth, and apply gentle pressure to the wound to stop it from bleeding. If the wound won't stop bleeding, or is deep and/or long, then he will have to see a vet right away. A deep and long cut will require stitches to close. He will also need antibiotics to prevent any infection from the dog bite, which the vet can prescribe. If the wound is shallow, you can gently clean it with warm water and antiseptic soap after it's stopped bleeding, but he should still see a vet for antibiotics (just not as an emergency). To keep him from licking it, you will need to put an Ecollar on him. You can get one from your vet's clinic, or you can make one yourself: http://dogsaholic.com/care/homemade-dog-cone.html
