Is it normal for a budgie mom to leave the nest box at 24 days?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female

My baby budgies are around 24 days old. Their mom has started to spend less time in the nest box. She goes in there only to feed her babies. Is this normal? Please help. Thanks.

This is perfectly normal and the babies will begin to eat more on their own and explore outside the nest as they continue to grow. The mother is likely trying to encourage them to do so as they get older and need less care from her.

You have asked this question many times before, so hopefully this answer will be helpful in your concerns. It is perfectly normal for the parents to feed the babies less as the babies get older and begin to explore more and eat on their own. Making sure that both mom and babies have access to food close by can help encourage the babies to begin eating more on their own. If mom is ready to breed again or lay another clutch she may also begin to lose some interest in her babies, especially if they are older and ready to leave the nest. If the babies or parents are showing any signs of illness, are not active, or don't seem to be thriving, then bringing them into your local vet for care is best.
