My dog has yellow diarrhea, vomit, blood after shots. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 5 years old | 10 lbs

My 5 year old miniature dachshund just recently had her yearly shots and her rabies. 2 days later she now has bright yellow diarrhea and vomited once. She is now eating white rice and finally drinking water. She's acting normal and playing with no signs of a fever. There was also blood in one of her stools. What should I do?

Two days is longer than normal for a vaccination reaction, but I would call your vet and let them know what;'s going on. It may be that next time she gets her vaccinations she may need to have them split up so she's not getting everything at once, or possibly premedicate with Benadryl. If she doesn't improve further I'd get her back in to see your vet.

You can see some diarrhea after getting vaccines, but it should pass within 24 hours. It could also be the bones causing it. I think giving her a bland diet of chicken and rice is a good idea, and feed that for a couple of days. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.
