Why is my dog throwing up whole food, not gagging, with gurgling?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 85 lbs

My 2 year old dog threw up dog food and bile on Friday. He acted fine but the past few days he has thrown up small piles of soggy whole pieces of dog food, with no liquid or bile with it. He does not gag or make noises as he throws it up. His stomach has been making gurgling noises. We have not made changes to his food and our other dog seems ok. He is still eating and using the bathroom fine. We live in a small town and the vet cannot see him until the 17th when he gets his next round of shots.

I'm sorry to hear that Coopef has not been feeling well. If you have not heard any audible sounds of vomiting or seen retching with abdominal effort, there is a chance that he is regurgitating. While this distinction may seems small, causes of vomiting (gastroenteritis, viruses, foreign bodies, pancreatitis, etc.) and regurgitation (megaesophagus, esophagitis, neurologic conditions, immune-mediated disease, etc.) differ greatly. Since he is still eating and acting normally, you can try withholding food for 12-24 hours, then introduce small frequent amounts of a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice (1 cup for every 10 pounds of body weight) for several days. However, if he continues vomiting or regurgitating, stops eating or becomes lethargic, you may need to take him to a different vet for evaluation before the 17th if your regular vet is unable to see him. I hope that all goes well!
