My cat throws up when hungry. Why does he vomit between meals?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 years and 10 months old | 12 lbs

My cat has been throwing up for the past few weeks. The vets have done a scan but there is no blockage. He only seems to throw up if he is left waiting more than 5 hours between meals so we currently have to wake ourselves up at 3-4am just to feed him otherwise he throws up.... what is wrong with him? He never did it until the last month.

Poor Arthur. It sounds like he may have an acid reflux problem or possibly even a motility problem. I would recommend getting him scoped if you haven't done so already. This is by far the best diagnostic tool, besides an ultrasound, for any GI (stomach/intestinal) problem in cats. You can also have your vet do a short course of antacids in the meantime, to prevent severe irritation to his esophagus from all of the puking. Poor guy. I hope that you get to the bottom of Arthur's illness soon.
