My dog has a lump that's oozing and crusting in his fur. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 7 years and 4 months old | 15 lbs

Any idea what this is? It was a lump and now it appears something is coming out of it and crusting in his hair.

It looks like that could be a wart, a benign tumor, or a malignant tumor. the best thing to do is have Seth seen by a vet for it. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if they are needed.

It looks as though Seth may have a papilloma (which is wart-like) or sebaceous (oil gland) cyst that may have ruptured and released fluid, causing the crusting. Consider taking him to his vet for an exam, as ruptured cysts or masses can easily become infected. Closely monitor Seth to assure that he is not licking the lesion and put an e-collar (cone) on him if he tries to lick the affected area.
