My cat Sooty is just over one and a half years of age, and he has suddenly just started randomly drooling. He will often have a wet patch on his chest where it has dripped on to him, but he isn't constantly drooling. Today some suddenly came out and dripped onto the back of my hand. We live in Australia which is supposed to be rabies free (although there is a form transmitted by bats). The only other symptoms he has is an increased appetite (the weather is getting colder) and separation anxiety.

If Sooty is drooling when he's sitting on you or relaxed, this drooling could be caused by a state of extreme relaxation. When cats become very relaxed, their jaw muscles will relax as well and drool can come out. When I was growing up, I had a cat that drooled whenever she sat on your lap. You would inevitably end up with a huge wet patch on your lap! It could also be caused by a dental problem such as a broken tooth or abscess, so I would have Sooty seen by a vet for a health check. It's not likely the drooling is caused by rabies, so there's no worry there :-)
