My new kitten won't eat. What should I feed a very young cat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 month and 6 days old | 4.5 lbs

Hi I've just been given a kitten through a friend who said it's 8 weeks and been weaned however I have a feeling that the kitten is younger and it's not eating anything, I've tried getting through to the original owners my friend got her from but they're all the way in Leeds, could you tell me what I could do?

Congratulations on your new kitten Oreo! Young kittens can be challenging to feed especially in the beginning. Try offering a few different kitten foods. I offer young kittens a dish with dry food, a dish of dry food soaked in warm water and a dish with canned kitten food. Especially for young kittens, I recommend Royal Canin Baby cat as they seem to generally like the food. Obviously watch for signs of illness like diarrhea, runny eyes/nose, lethargy or sneezing as not eating could also be a sign of illness. If these are seen take her to see the veterinarian as young kittens are fragile.
