Why are my dog's ear bumps red, scabbed, irritated, and growing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 5 years and 11 months old | 80 lbs

My dog, 6yr old Staffy, has two bumps on his ears. They started small, but now are scabbed over. For a while it leaked red fluid, but now the scab is ripped open, and the skin underneath looks very red and irritated. What do you think could be wrong? He does not seem to be in any pain, but it looks gross and seems to be getting bigger.

This could be a fungal or bacterial infection and you should have this examined by a veterinarian. Max may need to be prescribed a antifungal or antibacterial ointment. This could also be a reaction to an insect or spider bite, but without a hands-on exam it it not possible to say. Please make an appointment with your vet for today or next week.
