My dog's eye is crusty, itchy, bleeding. What to do before vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 7 months old | 48 lbs

My dalmatian pit bull mix 3 years old suddenly has runny crusty eyes. But, the left one she rubs with her paw, couch, wall, side of mattress anything to rub it up against. It's just been 2 days but this morning I noticed that there is some blood showing where it has either been scratched, rubbed raw or raw from the crusted. I have no money until next Friday and my vets office will not see my dog without payment at time of service. What can I do until I can pay for my vet to see her?? Help!!!

This does not sound like an emergency, so don't panic. Laylah may have allergies or something is irritating her eyes. Try to wrap her paws with vetwrap or a sock or something so she can't scratch her corneas with her nails, and if you have an e collar or can get one at a pet store, put this in her. Use a warm water compress (clean facecloth) on her eyes with her lids closed to sooth the itch several times daily until you can get to the vet.
