My kitten has bloody, soft stool but acts normal. Should I go to vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Devon Rex | Male | neutered | 4 months and 20 days old | 4.5 lbs

My 5 month old kitten has had a very small amount of red blood in his stool on and off for a couple of days now. In addition to this the stools are soft and very smelly. But he seems to be acting absolutely normally, eating and drinking all the same and is not lethargic. We don't think he has eaten anything harmful, what else could it be? We were going to take him to a vet today but the blood had disappeared from his stool again. Should we take him to a vet anyway?

Yes, definitely take Monty to the vet anyway. Because the blood in his stool has been on and off, it could be an off period and it may come back. Given that everything else is normal, it could be he's suffering from intestinal worms. It's important that any bloody stool is examined by a vet, so I would take Monty into a vet today :-)

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Ruby. Given she is otherwise normal, you can keep an eye on her for now but if she keeps having blood in her stool, then I would take her into a vet immediately. I hope this helps!
