Dog's hot spot still itching after vet visit. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old

My dog is itching really bad, he can't settle and hasn't slept all day, we thought it could have been this cut on his head. We taken him to the vet and they say it could be 'hot spot' or something. We have been home for about 2/3 hours now and the dog still hasn't stopped after the cream and tablets we given him. Im really worried about him and just want some clarification. Thank you

Hot spots can cause extreme irritation and discomfort and it often takes 12-24hours for medication to take full effect. Cooling the area with towels dampened with cooled boiled water or ice packs wrapped in a dry towel can help; do not use within 2hours of applying any creams however. In severe cases an elizabethan collar may be required to prevent further injury from scratching
