My senior dog has a dark spot on its eye iris. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 9 years and 10 months old | 55 lbs

Over the last couple of months the iris in my dog's right eye has got a dark or black area in the lower quadrant. It doesn't appear to extend into the pupil. She is 10 years age, a 25kg Mastiff cross, has daily exercise walks and seems pretty healthy.

From your description, it sounds as though Elle may have developed some form of anterior synechiae (essentially adhesions or scar tissue in the eye), pigment changes, or a mass on her iris/ciliary bodies. Elle's vet will be able to perform a thorough eye exam to evaluate her condition and may discuss referring her to a veterinary ophthalmologist if they have further concerns.
