My senior dog has a dark spot on its eye iris. What's wrong?

Over the last couple of months the iris in my dog's right eye has got a dark or black area in the lower quadrant. It doesn't appear to extend into the pupil. She is 10 years age, a 25kg Mastiff cross, has daily exercise walks and seems pretty healthy. Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 9 years and 10 months old | 55 lbs

From your description, it sounds as though Elle may have developed some form of anterior synechiae (essentially adhesions or scar tissue in the eye), pigment changes, or a mass on her iris/ciliary bodies. Elle's vet will be able to perform a thorough eye exam to evaluate her condition and may discuss referring her to a veterinary ophthalmologist if they have further concerns.
