Is it safe to mix homemade food with my dog's regular kibble?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Havanese | Male | unneutered | 10 months and 2 days old

We wanted to cook Kiba some food for a change so he's not too dependant on the same kibble all the time. We were thinking that he can have a homemade meal every now and again, with meat and rice and some veggies? Is that a good idea? He always wants to taste the food we eat so we thought this would be nice for him, I'm not sure about the nutritional value

Great questions! Properly balanced home cooked diets can be a great addition to Kiba's diet. However, many dogs do not tolerate frequent diet changes and can develop vomiting and diarrhea as a result. If you decide that you would like to offer home cooked food with the kibble, consider consistently mixing the two diets together. Balanceit.com is a website out of the UC Davis Veterinary School and offers a wide variety of recipes for properly balanced home cooked diets.
