My dog ate human food and is sick. What can I give him for his stomach?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | 7 years and 1 month old

My dog keeps swallowing and licking his lips allot. And now panting. And the. Ever so often he dry heaves. And makes a crying kinda sound. My friend gave him some hamburger meet with pasta sauce that was left over from dinner. I had to take it away from him cause he sat down but still was trying to eat. What can I give him? Some pepacid? How much for a jack-a-poo?

Hello. I am sorry that Carter is feeling sick. I would suggest firstly to feel Carter's abdomen, if it is hard or if he cries out, I would take him to a vet right away. If he is otherwise doing ok and settles down I would not feed him for the next 12 hours, and then introduce small amounts of chicken/rice slowly (boiled, boneless, skinless chicken breasts and boiled rice), and then introduce his normal food back in. I would not give any human medications as they can be harmful to dogs. If he continues to vomit or retch, or continues the swallowing/lip-licking action, that is a sign of nausea and I would have him seen by a veterinarian. He could have a bloated stomach which could twist and be life-threatening very quickly, or he could have a severe pancreatitis/gastritis from his hamburger and pasta dinner.
