Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 5 years and 2 months old | 22 lbs

5yr old spayed female experiencing loose stool turned to diarrhea within last 48hrs. No other symptoms. Parasite free. No fever. Not dehydrated. Eating and drinking normally. No abdominal pain. Only change in environment- new dog in house. Both are currently vaccinated. On chicken and rice diet for a little over 24hrs. Having 2-3 bowel movements per day (typical). Stool has gone from very soft brown to liquid yellow. Continue diet? Any additions to diet that will help?

At this point, Harper should be examined by her vet if she has not been responding to her bland diet of chicken and rice over the past 24 hours. Stress colitis can absolutely trigger diarrhea and it's possible that the addition of the new dog in the house was enough to cause this inflammation. Other possible causes of her diarrhea include viruses, gastroenteritis from eating inappropriate food or material, or parasites (but as you say - none apparent). Definitely continue the bland boiled white meat chicken and white rice diet until you are able to get Harper to her vet. Consider adding a probiotic, such as FortiFlora, into her diet as well. It sounds as though you are doing a great job monitoring her for changes, so keep up the good work!
