Why is my new puppy scratching so much and getting skin spots?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 3 months and 6 days old | 60 lbs

We just got a new puppy and she's scratching like crazy. It's getting to the point where she's getting spotty. She doesn't have fleas and was checked for mange. She's currently on Nexgard. What could It be/what's a solution?

Poor Penny! It sounds like she may have an allergy to something (either food allergies, or an allergy to something in the environment), or a bacterial or fungal skin infection. I would recommend talking with your vet to see what they recommend as the next step for Penny, since she is still very itchy and losing hair. Some possible testing or treatment options that may be helpful would include bacterial or fungal skin cultures, a trial course of steroids and/or antibiotics, or a food trial with a prescription hypoallergenic diet.
