Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 7 years and 6 months old | 7 lbs

My 7 year old neutered male cat is losing his hair. Healthy otherwise. Losing on inner thighs & belly, along spine & now spots all over. He really lose moth eaten. No fleas. No dry skin. No scratching. Eats & drinks well.

Skin infections, flea allergy dermatitis, behavioural overgrooming and mites infestation are all possible differentials even though absence of itch may give the impression that some of them are not responsible for the signs you described. I would suggest to treat with a high quality flea treatment (advocate or advantage), then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation.

If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try discovering the cause of the allergy.

Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollins, dust etc etc).
