My senior Morkie gained weight. Is Pedigree Senior dog food okay?

Pet's info: Dog | Morkie | Female | spayed | 1 year and 11 months old | 7.8 lbs

My morkie is almost 12 years old. She seems healthy if not quite as spritely. She had teeth pulled 2 years ago. Food choices are limited in my town in Italy. She's been eating Pedigree pate 150 g/day with free access to Purina kibble all adult. She's 7.6 lbs and gained about 1/2 lb over the winter. Vet said her weight was fine 2 years ago. Should I switch her to Pedigree Senior pouches which are available here, feed her half and half, is Pedigree and OK food?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Issa. Yes, this is fine to do. She may have gained weight because she has free access to the kibble. You should feed her according to the instructions on the bag, and only give her that amount. It's fine to feed her the senior pouches. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I would recommend that you switch her to a canned or wet diet that may be easier for her to eat. Also, if she appears to have a severe dental disease, an evaluation by a veterinarian is warranted. They may be able to evaluate her teeth and see if she would benefit from having a dental cleaning or perhaps having teeth extractions. Good luck and have a good night!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Hershey is adorable! I think you can give it a try. A few pieces of advice, with raw meats we worry about bacteria and food poisoning. Also you have to be sure you balance the nutrients, especially the calcium/phosphorus ration. All commercial dog foods do this for you already. Hello. This is a great question! She should be eating about 500 -550 calories PER DAY which includes all food and treats. She can eat any food as long as she stays inside that calorie window. If you feed her a lower calorie diet then she will get to eat more food and be less hungry. Purina ProPlan Weight Management Dry Food is 337 calories per cup so if you feed her this food she can eat 1.5 cups per day with a little left over for a treat or two. http://www.petsmart.com/dog/food/dry-food/purina-pro-plan-weight-management-formula-adult-dog-food-5148013.html?gclid=CKrvp4aRkdQCFZBgfgodPccMzA If you don't like this food you can use any diet. Just check the bag, it will tell you how many calories per cup. Take the 525 (using the middle of her calorie range) and divide it by the number of calories in each cup of food and that will tell you how many cups of that food she can have PER DAY. My 13 yr old dog still eats lots of her normal food. She's a healthy weight, about 50-60lbs for a Labrador. But she's been getting thinner and more gaunt. She's on an adult dog food, would it benefit her to switch to a senior dog food?

The food probably wont make much of a change in her weight gain, as this may be primarily a metabolic problem, not necessarily the food itself. I would also be concerned that something systemic such as liver or kidney disease could be the cause. Hello. At 7 years of age, I would consider them seniors. You definitely do not want to feed them the SO unless crystals or stones are already present. I think the weight management diet is an excellent choice. Do not worry about feeding a grain free unless they have demonstrated a sensitivity to these ingredients. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! While this would be a good short term diet, this lacks some key nutrients, vitamins and minerals. For that reason, a more complete commercial diet such as any of the Purina Pro Plan or Science Diet foods would be more appropriate. Good luck!

Hi there and thanks for posting on Boop by Petco. 7kg is 15.4lbs which is rather hefty for a 7 month old Shitzu. Typically, Shitzu's when they are adults should weight between 8-15lbs. The Happy Dog Grain Free Food is good, but I would feed less perhaps. If there is a guide on the package as to how much to give, I would advise on following their recommendations. At 7 months, she should be less than 15lbs. As always, nothing can beat a hands on veterinarian exam. If you are concerned about her weight, having a veterinarian take a look at Hazal and accurately assess based on her body condition score, if she is truly overweight or not. Sometimes it can be hard to say without an exam. I hope this helps and thanks for posting!

I would recommend putting Motzart on a commercial senior diet. Some preferred brands are Royal Canin, Hills and Purina. I would not recommend a raw diet, especially at this age because Motzart will not be getting a balanced diet and will be at risk for diseases such as pancreatitis, bowel obstructions, and infectious diseases like salmonella and E. coli.
