Why do I need a vet prescription for heartworm meds, even online?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 5 lbs

Two weeks ago Chico came to me thru animal rescue. Im wanting to start him on heartworm meds but the stores say i need a script to buy them. Why shud i have to pay for a vet to write a script for something ill end up buying online?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question. You need a script because the medication is prescription only. Even if you tried to buy the heartworm medication online, it still requires a script. Should you find heartworm medications that do not require a script, they are counterfeit. I hope this helps!

In order to get heartworm medication, you must get it from your veterinarian OR you can get a prescription authorizing heartworm medication to be used at a pharmacy. I just moved to a city that is 7th in the nation for heart worms from mosquito's. I want to get a prescription for heart worm prevention. Is there a way to get that online or do I have to go into the local vet?
You will need to go to a vet as it requires a negative heartworm test before it can be prescribed. This is a simple, fast blood-test that will let the vet know it is safe to start preventive medication. Why this is required is if your pet already has heartworms and is given the medication, it can kill the worms too quickly which can cause blockages of the blood vessels leading to potential stroke or death. Making sure your pet is negative first will ensure it is safe to administer.

What over the counter monthly heartworm/parasite medication would you recommend? I can't afford to buy it from my vet at the moment.
Hi there. Unfortunately, there are no heartworm preventatives that are available over-the-counter - by definition, these are prescription products. But, you can certainly choose to order them through an online pharmacy like 1-800-PetMeds or Chewy.com if you like, as these may be less expensive than purchasing through your vet's office. Your veterinarian should be able to give you a prescription to have filled at any pharmacy you choose, as long as your pet has had an exam within the past year. :)

Does a vet have to give puppies heartworm prevention?
I do recommend monthly heartworm prevention starting at 8 weeks of age. It is a prescription so a veterinarian does not have to personally give the pill but you need to either buy it from a vet or get a prescription from a vet. The only medication that needed to be at a veterinarian's office is Pro-heart. This is an injectable heartworm prevention that lasts for 6 months. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

Hello, I have adopted a new pure bred American Labrador and would like to get her started on heart and tick medications. I do not have a vet apt. until August 2nd and am looking for advice.
Hi and thanks for posting on Boop by Petco! The heartworm preventatives typically do require a prescription from your veterinarian which may require an exam initially if this is Annie's first time visiting her veterinarian. There are some over the counter flea preventatives such as Advantix and Advantage or Frontline. However, these may not work as well as prescription flea preventatives from a veterinarian. There are no over the counter heartworm preventatives- this does require a prescription with Annie's veterinarian. I hope this helps!

Is it ok to get flea and tick plus heartworm medicine from Dr. Foster and smith.com or is it best to go directly through your vet? Why or why not?
Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Good question! In general it is best to purchase these medications from your veterinarian. When purchased through a veterinarian the company will most often guarantee the effectiveness. This is usually not the case with products bought online or over the counter. When sold through a veterinarian the company that manufactures the product will stand behind the product and often pay for medical treatment should the product not work for some reason. The veterinarian also knows how to properly store the product so that it does not get damaged or becomes ineffective. Finally, sometimes over the counter products or products sold online can be counterfeit or even dangerous to use. Your veterinarian also knows what particular products tend to be most effective for your location.

Is there any medication like tri heart plus thats around the same price point i need to get my dogs their medication and not even my vet is being helpful since they only want to sell me the Heartgard even tho i've told them i can not afford that medi
Tri-Heart is generic Heartgard and is just as effective. I am not sure why your vet won't prescribe it for you. You cannot buy any heartworm prevention over the counter so you will need a prescription. I suggest you bring your dog to one of the VETCO vaccine clinics at your local Petco stores (see schedule below). Bring proof of his last negative heartworm test and they can give you a prescription for the Tri-Heart. There is no charge for the exam. Just the cost of the medication. Hope this helps! I saw a post on here that said buying flea meds from an online get is illegal. Can someone expand on this for me, like what kind of products are illegal to buy? I want to know because I buy a lot of my pets stuff online after I bought it from my vet
We legally cannot prescribe anything, including flea medication, without seeing the animal in person. That's why it's illegal to buy flea medication online from a vet. Please be careful buying things like Revolution online without a prescription, as those are often counterfeit products.

Hi so my dog takes heartgard plus for her heart worms I need more of the chewable is there a way to reorder the same type the vet already gave me without having to schedule an appointment and waste more money when I know what she needs.
Heartgard plus is a prescription only medication, so you need to get a script from Akita's vet in order to get it. You can call and ask them to write a script for it if she's been seen by the vet within in the last year. Otherwise, you will have to make an appointment.
