My dog hurts after spay. Can I give Tylenol, Ibuprofen, or Aspirin?

My dog got spayed today and she is starting to hurt. I was wondering If I could give her a tylenol or ibuprofen or aspirin for something to help her until the vet opens in the morning

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Luna. Please do not give any of those to her! Ibuprofen is highly toxic to dogs, and even one 200mg pill tablet is enough to cause damage to internal organs in your dog. Tylenol and aspirin are both toxic. If she is in pain, unfortunately there are no OTC pain medications you can give her. Should she appear to be in severe pain, I'd take her into an ER vet now. Otherwise, keep her confined to limit her movement, and keep her as comfortable as possible until you get her into the vet in the morning. Best of luck.

Please do not give Luna any paracetamol. It contains acetaminophen which has a very narrow margin of safety and can be toxic to dogs. Unfortunately many human pain relievers are toxic to dogs, and it's not recommended to give to them. Getting her into the vet tomorrow is the best idea, and I would rest her until then. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to potty on a lead only and bring her right back in when she's done. If she is having trouble standing up, help her when she gets up. Good luck!

I'm sorry that Moo-moo is hurt! Unfortunately, both ibuprofen and Tylenol are toxic to dogs, so you cannot give her either of these medications. There are no over-the-counter human pain medications that are safe for dogs, so I'm afraid that you will need to take her to the vet for an exam - he/she can prescribe a safe and effective pain medication for her if needed.

Unfortunately, there are no human OTC medications that would be safe for a dog that underwent surgery so recently. I would recommend calling your vet to see if they can prescribe something, or have Josie evaluated by an emergency vet. You can try to use an ice pack wrapped in a towel for 15 minutes several times a day, and encourage walking around the house, but no running or jumping.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. I'm sorry to hear that Eva injured her leg! Unfortunately, there are no safe human pain medications that can be given to dogs. Medications such as Advil, Aspirin or Tylenol can be fatally toxic to dogs, and should not be given. They can also interfere with medications that your veterinarian will want to prescribe when he/she sees Eva on Monday. The best thing you can do to help Eva in the meantime is restrict her activity. If she has a crate, I recommend keeping her in this during the day and night, except for taking her out on a leash to urinate/defecate outside 3-4 times per day. If you don't have a crate, keeping her restricted to one room in the house where she cannot run or jump on/off things will be the most helpful. If you feel that Eva is in too much pain - i.e. she is whining or crying constantly - she should be seen by an emergency veterinarian and you should not wait until Monday. I hope this is helpful!

Many human ones like the one you listed above are toxic to dogs, and can be fatal if taken. I would have him seen by his vet. The vet can prescribe a safe pain medication for you to give him as needed. I hope this helps!

My dog was attacked by another dog, she had drains that have been removed and has stitches. She is out of the pain pills from the vet but I was wondering if there was something I could give her OTC because I’m sure she is sore.
Unfortunately I do not recommend giving any over the counter pain medications to dogs. While aspirin is available in some pet stores and technically can be given to dogs it can easily cause stomach upset and if Koda was recently given any kind of NSAID medication it could cause serious problems. It’s also not the best for pain! I would recommend calling your vet to see if they can refill the pain medication for Koda since she’s still sore. Sometimes a warm compress can also help with comfort.

My shitzu Lily jumped off the couch and sprained her leg. She can hardly walk on it. She's 15 pounds. I heard that dogs can take baby aspirin or regular aspirin. Is that right? Would that help her pain?
No, that isn't correct. It isn't safe to give dogs aspirin, even baby aspirin. It cause GI ulcers ad bleeding. If Lily can hardly walk on it, she needs to see a vet because she is in a lot of pain. Rest her tonight, and take her into a vet first thing in the morning. If you fear she is extremely painful, take her into an ER vet now. Best of luck.

I don’t recommend starting any medications without first consulting your veterinarian. Treating your pet at home without having seen your vet first could mask symptoms that could lead to a quicker diagnosis should it become necessary for your pet to be examined. Arbitrary administration of antibiotics without knowing if it is appropriate for the condition is what creates antibiotic-resistant organisms. Absolutely DO NOT give your dog Tylenol, or any other human analgesic or NSAID. At best, they cause gastric bleeding, at worst they are toxic to liver and kidneys. Consult your veterinarian before giving your dog medications of any kind.

Poor Maka. I would not recommend to give any Tylenol, ibuprofen (Advil), or naproxen (Aleve) or human prescribe meds as most of these are toxic to dogs. You can give him 1/2 tablet of baby aspirin twice a day but I would not continue this long term because it can cause an upset tummy. As soon as you’re able to talk to your vet, I would talk to him about giving something that is more appropriate for dogs. Your vet should be able prescribe him something. I hope this helps!
