Is my dog protected from rabies after a fight with an expired vaccine?

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Female | spayed | 1 year and 5 months old | 37 lbs

My dog was confronted by my neighbors dog while on a walk. They both showed teeth but I didn’t see any cuts/blood on her. But I wanted to check that she is okay on her rabies vaccine. It expired on April 11th but my vet is only seeing emergency patients not routine ones so we didn’t get it yet. Is she still protected? I know our neighbors get their dog yearly shots as well and both are inside animals. I just wanted to put my mind at ease.

Hello, and thanks for using Boop by Petco. The most important thing is that your dog was vaccinated for Rabies prior to this attack, and that you boostered his vaccine again afterwards. The rabies vaccine is quite effective, and boostering the vaccine after the attack will help in case one of the unvaccinated dog did have rabies. Ideally, it would be beneficial to observe all 3 dogs for 10 days after the attack, but you have done everything right with your own dog. If that third missing dog did have rabies and has since died, then the other two (unvaccinated) dogs would likely need to be euthanized, and your dog would need to be closely monitored for several months - but the risk of your dog contracting rabies with an up-to-date vaccination status is very very low. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! If your dog is vaccinated then he should be fine but I would have the rabies boostered. If your dog is over due then he should be boostered and put in a 6 month quarantine. If he is NOT vaccinated and the dog that bit him has been confirmed to be Rabies positive your dog should be euthanized. If you are not sure if the dog that bit him is truly positive for rabies then Bruno should be quarantined for 6 months. I wish you the best!

My friend's vaccinated dog licked me on my fingers a few days ago. Do I need to get an anti rabies vaccine?
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! No, if the dog has had his rabies vaccine you are fine. Also you would need to have open cuts on your fingers for the rabies virus to enter your body. Always wash your hands after allowing a dog to lick you. Have a good day!

I certainly understand your concern given how deadly rabies is, but if he is up to date with his rabies vaccines, there is no need to worry. He is fully protected and cannot get it. Rabies is transferred by bites, so a little saliva transfer won't be enough. I hope this helps!

No you are fine. I'm glad you have had Apollo vaccinated against rabies. Rabies is spread from infected animals primarily by biting as the virus is in the saliva. The animals appear sick, disoriented and sometime drool as they lose the ability to swallow. Rabies is a fatal disease for animals and people that is why rabies vaccinations are so important. My puppy has had it’s first vaccine, And he bit me today. The pictures are attached. He behaves normally and he bit me while playing. Also sometimes he gets aggressive (maybe) at night and bites his toys furiously. Do i need vaccines?
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! If Austin has had his rabies vaccine you should be fine. But you should contact your local health department and talk to a human physician. If Austin has Rabies in the transmissible form (in the salivary glands) then he will show neurologic signs for rabies with in 10 days. Keep him quarantined for 10 days. If he dies from any cause he should be tested for Rabies if it is before the 10 days quarantine. Always keep your pets up to date on rabies and prevent them interacting with wild life and unvaccinated pets. I wish you the best!

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. If the dog is up to date on its rabies vaccinations, the chance of you contracting rabies is incredibly low. What we recommend is to quarantine the dog who bit you (or have the owner of the dog quarantine it) for 10 days and monitor the dog for the development of any abnormal neurologic signs. If the dog is completely normal after 10 days from the time you were bit, you are in the clear. If the dog becomes sick at all in that time frame, or if you become sick at all, I recommend contacting your doctor. I hope this is helpful - best of luck!

Hello. If the puppy was perfectly healthy, not acting sick at all, especially anything that resembled strange neurological behavior, then no. Plus, since the puppy was born in foster care, unless there was a chance it was previously bitten by a wild animal, there is no way it could have contracted rabies.
