My spayed dog shows heat signs. Is her spay surgery incomplete?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 41 lbs

Hi I got my dog in January from a 3rd world country and she was spayed there, her scar doesn’t look right and she was mounting my legs despite being spayed, and for the last few days she has been getting my neutered male dog to mount her, and I checked her parts they looked swollen and there was a tiny amount of bloody discharge. Does this sound like her spay surgery wasn’t done correctly and if so what can be done?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Trixie. I agree, this does not sound right. It sounds like she is showing heat behaviors, and this can be a sign of an ovarian remnant left behind. I'd have her seen by a vet today or tomorrow for a hormone stimulation test. This will diagnose if she does have an ovarian remnant or not. If she does, she will need surgery to remove it. Best of luck.
