How to relieve dog bite pain at home until I can see the vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Rat Terrier | Male | neutered | 11 years and 3 months old | 25 lbs

I can’t get to my vet until morning. But I have a dog with a possible dog bite on side of his neck. Not bleeding much, and doesn’t appear to have gone into muscle but is fully through the fur/skin layer. What can I give for pain until morning?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Sam. Poor boy! Unfortunately there are no OTC pain relievers you can give him. Many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. You can try putting a cold compress on his neck where he got the bite to see if that helps with his pain. Have him seen by a vet first thing in the morning. Best of luck.

Oh no, poor Panda. Unfortunately there are no OTC pain relievers you can give him, many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I would take him into a vet now to get him pain relief. Best of luck.

Ouch, poor Koda! Unfortunately, there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs. Koda's vet will be able to prescribe any necessary medications. You can try placing a warm compress on the lesion periodically to temporarily provide a bit of relief until his appointment later this morning. I hope that he's feeling better soon!

My dog got bitten in his neck. Sadly there is no vet at my location. I am giving him some bacteria removal powder. But it seems like his is still in pain . What to do now?
I would strongly recommend that you take OJ to a vet. Dog bites are very nasty, and get infected quite easily. They often require oral prescription antibiotics and pain medications. Unfortunately, it is illegal for me to prescribe medications without physically examining OJ, and there aren't OTC pain medications that are safe for dogs. You can help him by getting him to rest, bringing food and water to him, and keeping the wound clean. Just use a warm wet washcloth or gentle water spraying, don't use alcohol or peroxide on the wound.

My jack Russell terrier got into it with my neighbors husky, he has a wound on his head that was bleeding. I cleaned it and put some Neosporin on it, now he is acting strange, he is panting and won't eat. Should I give him an over the counter pain me
Poor Viper! I don't recommend giving over the counter pain medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen or Tylenol as these can have serious side effects in animals. It will also limit the type of pain medication that your veterinarian can prescribe and may result in Viper not getting adequate pain control. Unfortunately there is nothing over the counter that can be given to dogs for pain control, so if he is acting very painful, I would recommend taking him to a vet tonight if you can. If you are unable to, I would recommend taking him as soon as you can tomorrow. Most bite wounds will get infected and they almost always need oral antibiotics. The veterinarian will also make sure the wound isn't worse than it looks. Bite wounds can appear small on the surface, but can penetrate deeper than what we see or tear the skin from underlying tissue so that a pocket is created under the skin. Hi, My dog tripped and bumped his jaw while going up some steps and hit the bottom of his jaw and there was a bit of blood but he's still nursing it and licking it, I think he will be in a bit of pain tonight or tomorrow is there anything I can give
I am so sorry this happened to your Charlie. I would start with a cool compress for the first followed by, for the next 24 hours and a warm compress. This will serve to lessen both the pain and the inflammation in the area. Making your Charlie more comfortable. Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. Ibuprofen is very toxic to dogs, do not give it to Simon. It is an emergency, please try and take Simon to your nearest open vet or local emergency service to get him seen. There are no over the counter medications that would be safe to administer at home, I am afraid.

Our dog was injured by a mountain lion. Is there any OTC human med we can give her to ease the immediate pain? We can't get to a vet, and will likely have to give stitches. Med dosage info as well please
Please clean and flush the wounds with warm water to prevent infection. Put pressure on them if they are bleeding. You can use aspirin for pain. There is a section on this website that has information and dosages for common over the counter medications. You may need a cone so she doesn’t lick the wounds. My dog got bitten in his cheek. What should I do?
Ideally, he should be seen by your veterinarian. Potential infection and pain are concerns that should be addressed by a vet. A rabies booster may also be considered. If a vet visit is not possible right now, place an e-collar (cone) on Simon to prevent rubbing or pawing. Keep the wound clean with a diluted Betadine or Hibiclens solution, being careful to not get any in his mouth. Monitor for redness, swelling, active bleeding, discharge, fever or loss of appetite. This are all symptoms that require veterinary attention. Unfortunately, there are no completely safe OTC products that can be given for pain. Many or toxic to dogs or easily overdosed.

My dog has a tooth extraction & finished carprofen yesterday. Today he's clearly in discomfort and my vet doesn't have an on call. Is there anything I can give him overnight to calm him and ease the pain?
Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. I'm sorry to hear that Odin still seems uncomfortable from his tooth extraction. You may try applying an ice pack wrapped in a small towel to the swollen or painful area. I DO NOT recommend giving him any pain medications that intended for humans, as these can be fatally toxic to dogs. I recommend contacting your veterinarian during normal business hours to ask for other suggestions. If it has been this long and he is still painful, there may be a complication that needs to be addressed. I hope this is helpful!
