My dog's cyst popped. How to care for it and prevent infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Havanese | Male | neutered | 10 years and 2 months old | 20 lbs

My dogs cyst popped on its own and I cleaned it with water and put ointment and put a bandage. But, I want to know what is the best way to clean it daily and what is the best way to cure it so it doesn’t get infected? With the covid-19 I am not able to take him in and he doesn’t seem so bothered by it.

You've cleaned Chulo's cyst already, you don't need to clean it daily. That will interrupt the healing process. Leave it be for now. To keep him from licking at it, you can put an Ecollar on him. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. I hope this helps.
