My dog ate plastic toy pieces. Is it safe to wait for them to pass?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd - miniature | Female | spayed | 1 year and 3 months old | 27 lbs

My dog ate a part of her plastic toy. There was no loose squeaker so just the missing plastic as seen in photo. Assuming it was chewed up and swallowed in small pieces, is it ok to wait and see if she passes it in her stool?

As long as the pieces ingested are small, they will likely pass in the next 24 hours. Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, abdominal pain or straining to defecate. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian.
