My dog keeps licking a rash on his leg, and it's not getting better.

Hi, I’ve noticed this rash on my dog a few days ago because I’ve seen him licking his leg so I went to buy him this antimicrobial at Petco but he’s still licking his leg what should I do please advise..

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Kibou. Poor boy! That looks like a growth of some kind, and it's clearly bothering him if he keeps licking at it. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. Give his vet a call to make him an appointment. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sadly a lot of skin masses can look the same. It could be a Mast Cell tumor (which is a cancerous growth that should be removed and biopsied), a cyst, a histiocytoma (though he is a bit old for that, they end to occur in younger dogs). Any skin bumps that is new, rapidly grows, changes or is possibly infected should be checked by a Vet. They can decide whether it should be aspirated and sent to the lab or removed surgically to send the entire specimen for biopsy. I hope this helps and I wish Boston the very best!

My dog have rashes on his leg? He continuously licking it. What medicine should be given for that ?
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! The black hairless area is a normal elbow callus. The pink area could be a growth or irritation or a skin infection. I would prevent the licking by using an E-collar. Then I would apply a triple antibiotic cream. Force him to lay on soft bedding to prevent further trauma and you can try an antihistamine. If there is no improvement the area should be looked at by a Vet as he may need oral antibiotics and a steroid or apoquel. My dog has a red bump on his leg that keeps coming back. He keeps on licking it what can it be?
I would recommend that Spoko have this bump checked out. It could be anything from a skin tag or wart that gets irritated because he licks, to an infection or foreign body (something stuck under the skin), to a small tumor. After examination, a vet may decide to collect a small sample of cells to look at under a microscope to hopefully determine the cause so that an appropriate treatment plan can be created. While you wait for his appointment, try to keep Spoko from licking the bump; he may need to wear an e-collar/cone to prevent this.

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Anytime a new mass is noticed, I always recommend having it evaluated to see what it is and if anything needs to be done about it. Unfortunately, we can't tell anything about a mass by just looking at it. Your vet can perform a simple test called a fine needle aspirate where they use a small needle to collect some cells from the mass, then look at them under the microscope. They may even need to send the cells to the lab for a pathologist to examine them, so we know what the mass is. If it is benign, you might not need to do anything about the mass at all, but if they see cells that worry them, they might recommend removing the mass. Skin tumors that have hair growing from them are generally benign, but I always recommend having them checked just to be safe. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Lee! Based on your photo is appears to be either a pyoderma (skin infection) or a hot spot (superficial skin infection). Because it is getting worse quickly, make an appointment tomorrow to get your Vet to look at ti. They will likely prescribe antibiotics, something for the itch, and maybe a topical. Good luck!

Given that this has been ongoing in River for six weeks now, I would say no, this will not likely resolve on its own. It's apparently bothering her as well if she is licking and nipping at it. It could be a benign tumor, a cyst, or less likely a malignant growth causing this lump. I do recommend having her seen by a vet for it because this has been ongoing for a significant period of time, and because it is now bothering her. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options with you. It is difficult to say what this could be but looking like this I would want a veterinarian to examine this and perform additional testing on it to ensure it is not cancerous. I would recommend you have your veterinarian take a look at this for further testing to help determine what the masses may be.
