Dog anal gland abscess might rupture. Is it life-threatening?

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Female | spayed | 1 year and 5 months old | 21 lbs

My dog needs her anal glands expressed. She's oozing poop out of her butt, is swollen and noticing an absess is starting to form. Couldn't get her in until tomorrow morning. Is this life threatening if overnight it ends up rupturing?

Thank you for contacting PetCoach with your question about Lily. Poor girl! It's not life threatening if it ends up rupturing, but it will be painful for her. Put a cone on her to keep her from licking it tonight. If you don't have one, you can make one at home and I will put a link below on how to do it. Keep her warm and comfortable, and put some old sheets on where she sleeps so her normal bedding doesn't get dirty from the leaking. Get her into a vet first thing in the morning. Ouch, poor Luna! Based on the pictures you provided (thank you for that!), they do not look overly red, swollen, and there are no signs of blood. As long as she is eating and drinking normally, going to the bathroom normally, and otherwise behaving normally, she can wait until the morning to see the vet. I would put an Ecollar on her to prevent her from licking at her anus, and you can make one at home. I will put a link below on how to do that. If she is in a lot of pain, isn't eating, is lethargic, and/or is having trouble going to the bathroom, then I would take her into a vet now. Can a dog get sick or die from having a ruptured anal gland.
A dog can get sick, as it can advance to an infection, and if the infection is eventually severe enough then he could die from it as well. bottom line you need to take Little man to the vet in order to get it treated with antibiotics.

Unfortunately, Blu really needs a vet. I would get an ecollar for when this ruptures. It looks like it is going to rupture soon. This is not only painful and she should get pain meds but she also needs antibiotics for an infection. Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. Pain medication and antiboitics are appropriate treatment for an anal gland rupture. Often we will express the other gland while we are addressing the ruptured gland, in case that one is about to rupture. Sometimes this is impossible if the animals are just too painful. I usually don't recommend removal of the anal gland when it is the first time, as there can be severe complications with the surgery. After a rupture there will be some 'juice' coming out, as some fluid will still drain from the rupture hole. It is important this is left open to drain to prevent another abscess from forming again. I also usually recommend a recheck in 10-14 days to express the glands again and make sure they are patent, as sometimes the swelling can cause them to block again. The best way to help Parker heal is to give the medications as prescribed, and keep a cone on him so he can't chew or lick at the area. Best of luck with Parker.

Hello. Most anal gland infections heal up quite nicely with medications & keeping the area clean. Unless there is a special circumstance involving Tia's glands, such as the area is just not healing, additional flushing & treatment is usually not necessary. Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sorry to hear about Heidi. Sounds like you guys are absolutely right. This is a judgement call. If she is incredibly uncomfortable I would advise taking her tonight. But if she is able to rest, doesn't seem to be in too much pain, I think you can wait until tomorrow to get it assessed. The fact that it ruptured is a good thing, it's probably less painful although a little more messy to deal with. Your vet will probably make sure both anal glands are emptied, advise topical wound treatment, give some antibiotics, anti inflammatories, pain meds, E collar, etc. Keep placing neosporin right on and even in the wound. Also warm compressing it will encourage drainage and ease a lot of pain. Good luck with Heidi.

It could be a ruptured anal gland abscess. An exam with your veterinarian will confirm this. Place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent licking. If it is an abscess, it will need to be flushed and cleaned. Antibiotics and pain medications will likely be indicated.

Yes, just based on your description (since I can't see it), it probably is a ruptured anal gland abscess. If the dog will let you, keep the area clean (you can use a baby wipe) and apply some Neosporin to it twice a day until the owner returns. It would also be recommended that you get her a "cone" collar to stop her from licking it. This can be painful and messy so I recommend using a hot compress on the area several times a day to keep it clean and draining. Then I apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on the surface. As Milo will lick the area using a cone or restraint collar to prevent licking will help it heal faster. Once the sac has ruptured it usually will heal quickly on its own. Continue the antibiotics until they are finished. To prevent this from happening again I would have Milo's anal sacs expressed regularly, every two to three months. Hello, thank you for your question about Abby. If the abscess has already ruptured and you are able to warm compress the area, I would recommend allowing it to drain and do not feel that it needs any topical treatment. Abby should be discouraged from licking at the area as this will predispose her to developing a secondary infection. You could purchase an e-collar at a pet store or try using a t-shirt at home. After the holiday I would recommend contacting your veterinarian and relaying this information. They may recommend starting a short course of antibiotics at that time to help Abby heal quicker and prevent development of an infection. They can also consider pain medication at that time.
