Dog anal gland abscess might rupture. Is it life-threatening?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Female | spayed | 1 year and 5 months old | 21 lbs

My dog needs her anal glands expressed. She's oozing poop out of her butt, is swollen and noticing an absess is starting to form. Couldn't get her in until tomorrow morning. Is this life threatening if overnight it ends up rupturing?

Thank you for contacting PetCoach with your question about Lily. Poor girl! It's not life threatening if it ends up rupturing, but it will be painful for her. Put a cone on her to keep her from licking it tonight. If you don't have one, you can make one at home and I will put a link below on how to do it. Keep her warm and comfortable, and put some old sheets on where she sleeps so her normal bedding doesn't get dirty from the leaking. Get her into a vet first thing in the morning. I hope this helps! http://dogsaholic.com/care/homemade-dog-cone.html
