My dog ate xylitol days ago. Is he okay if he seems fine now?

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | neutered | 4 years and 4 months old | 55 lbs

My dog ate peanut butter with xylitol (I just found out that it's poisonous) the last time was 4 days ago (but I gave him the peanut butter over the course of a few weeks). He's not lethargic/gums are pink/he's been in good spirits/etc.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Mimmo. Typically effects of xylitol toxicity are seen within 15-30 minutes of ingestion. If he's ok now, then he's fine but do not give him any more! I hope this helps!

Typically you see signs of xylitol toxicity 15-30 minutes after ingestion. If it's been an hour, she may be ok but monitor Middy tonight closely. Any concerning signs, get her into an ER vet right away. Otherwise, have her seen by her vet tomorrow.

How can I tell if my dog has xylitol poisoning?
Xylitol causes hypoglycemia and potentially liver failure. If Arlo May have ingested xylitol in the past 48 hours I’d recommend contacting the Pet Poison Helpline (www.petpoisonhelpline.com). If it’s been more than 48 hours I’d recommend seeing your vet to have them check liver values.

You would see signs of toxicity within 15-30 minutes after ingestion, so watch him for this time. If you don't see any signs after this time, he should be fine. I hope this helps!

My dog chewed on (but didn’t swallow) a single piece of gum with xylitol. It had been previously chewed by me for a long time. This was about 20 minutes ago and he seems fine. He weighs about 30 lbs
This quantity is unlikely to give any problem other than mild gastrointestinal upset. Toxic effects seen with ingestion of 0.15 g/kg consist of hypoglycemia and hepatic failure. Based on this calculation your dog should have ingested 1,95grs; even though chewing gum pieces have surprisingly variable amounts of xylitol depending on their flavor the maximum amount I have found is 0.3grs per gum. Having said that, in Harley's case we are definitively far away from toxic dosages. I would recommend to monitor him for the next 4-6hours and, should any sign occur, like vomiting and diarrhoea, a check up would be required.

I THINK my cat ate a small crumb of cupcake which has xylitol in it! It’s been over 30mins and she seems to have normal activity level, but is it enough to hurt her?? It was maybe the size of half a small sized cat treat. Or smaller.

Xylitol toxicity occurs between 15-30 minutes after ingestion, and if it's been over 30 minutes and she is fine, she may not have eaten it. Either that, or the bit she ate was not big enough to cause any problems. I'd keep an eye on her for now, but if she is fine by tomorrow morning, there will be no need to worry. I hope this helps.

Xylitol is an artificial sweetener that is very toxic to dogs. Your dog should be seen by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER immediately. Xylitol ingestion can cause dangerously low blood sugar levels and can lead to liver failure.

Vomiting can be observed with gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, food sensitivity, foreign body ingestion and obstruction or other conditions such as pancreatitis or kidney disease. I think that this is less likely due to xylitol toxicity at this point but there is always the possibility that this could be due to long lasting effects to the liver which is possible with this toxicity. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include abdominal imaging and general bloodwork. As long as Scooby doesn’t have any medical conditions like pancreatitis I don’t think you have anything to worry about. Peanut butter without xylitol is not toxic, and although the one episode of vomiting may be related or you may see diarrhea it should be self limiting. If Scooby continues to vomit however you should see your vet.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! If you have the packaging see if it tells you how many milligrams (mg) of xylitol it contains or you can call the company and ask. Bentley would have had to ingest 2410mg of xylitol for it to be a toxic dose. I doubt that him licking a basically empty container would have enough to harm him. But it isn't wrong to double check. Hi there. Yes, if the mint contained xylitol, this is very concerning as it only takes a very small amount to be toxic - especially in a small dog. I would recommend looking up the brand name of the mint online to check the ingredient list. If xylitol is listed as an ingredient, you need to take her to the vet immediately for treatment.
