My senior Yorkie's stomach feels tight, and he's scooting. Normal?

Hi, my 11 year old Yorkie’s tummy feels tight, is this normal? I don’t recall it feeling this tight before. He seems to be acting normal except for the occasional butt scout along the floor.

This may be normal. Bentley could have eaten more than usual. If he's otherwise acting normally, I would not worry. Scooting the butt can be due to an anal sac problem, and they may need to be expressed. Have him seen by a vet for that and while there, the vet can check out his stomach. I hope this helps!

Garling noises are called borborygmi and this can be normal stomach noises, but when heard along with lack of appetite this suggests gastritis (inflamed stomach). Gastritis can be cause by many things including dietary indiscretion (eating something he shouldn't have), FB ingestion, and many organ malfunctions. The rubbing of the side of his butt on things is also a sign that his anal glands (two sacs located on the inside of his rectum at the 4 o'clock and 10 o'clock position) are possibly full and irritating him. Anal glands are suspected to be caused by allergies and also often get full when pets go through bouts of diarrhea, because normally they are expressed when hard feces push past them. Because of the multiple factors that are affecting your pet, and the possible need for him to get his anal glands manually expressed to reduce discomfort, I am recommending taking him into your vet for a good exam. If he is still eating and drinking with no vomiting and playful then it may be from a tummy ache. If he seems to be panting heavily or trying to vomiting and not eating, then it is time to worry. Since he is so big, skipping a meal will not harm him and this may give his stomach a chance to rest.

Hernias typically don't pop up overnight unless there has been some sort of trauma. Without a physical exam, it is difficult to say if the symptoms are related. It is never recommended to medicate a pet without the advice of your veterinarian. Panadol (paracetamol) can be toxic to dogs. It can cause liver and kidney damage. A thorough exam and blood work by your veterinarian is recommended. This may diagnose the cause of Bara's symptoms as well as assess liver and kidney function.

I'm sorry to hear platanito isn't feeling himself. He may be having episodes of stomach or intestinal pain that could cause him to tense his belly the way you are describing. If this is the case it can be caused by eating things that inflame the stomach or pancreas and you can offer him a very bland diet (boiled chicken breast and white rice OR chicken baby food for example) until your appointment with the vet. Another reason they can appear to tense their belly, lay down and be hesitant to move is back pain. If this is the case it's important to keep him very quiet and prevent jumping until his vet evaluates him. I hope he is feeling better very soon.

He may have a tummy ache, which is making him uncomfortable. Give it a few days to a week to see if he is still uncomfortable in his belly. If he continues to show sensitivity after that time frame then it's a good idea to just get him examined by your vet to make sure there is nothing to worry about, like organomegaly (enlarged organs) in the belly.

However, if this does not improve, have Peanut evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment as anal sac expression may be indicated as this may be due to anal sac impaction or infection. Symptoms like this can be related to pain in the back or pain in the pancreas. Even though she is acting normal, the tense areas indicate there is some discomfort and I recommend to have her examined by her veterinarian. The doctor may recommend radiographs to check the spine or a blood test to check the pancreas. Both conditions should be treated to alleviate pain. At his age Diarrhea can be a sign of a serious condition rather than a simple gastrointestinal upset, i would strongly advice taking him to the vet for a full checkup including blood test to get a full health assessment.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bentley. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian again as his symptoms are worrisome. He should have x-rays of his belly to rule out an intestinal obstruction. He should also have bloodwork to test him for pancreatitis as this is very common in his breed. Based on these results, an updated treatment plan can be made. I hope this information helps!
